Charger/inverter vs charger only was created by Mike Jaskwhich
My 1981 Whitby had a Freedom marine 20, 2000 watts ,100 amp.charger/inverter that apparently died and was removed from the boat. I need a charger at least. I have a northern lights generator. I don't have a lot of AC requirements.
There seems to be some debate about charger /inverters versus chargers only.
What is the consensus of other Whitby owners regarding this subject.

An inverter could be useful if you have short term or light loads when you don’t want to crank up the generator. Also if you have any critical 120v equipment (blender?) the inverter serves as an emergency backup. I have a 2000w pure sine wave inverter. Great for running the microwave for a couple minutes to heat up a cup of tea, watch a movie in a quiet anchorage, etc. Also the 12v system can be recharged with solar, engine, etc so you can always get 120v, even when the generator breaks down.... maybe because you don’t run it enough (it’s a vicious circle) or run it long enough to get it to proper operating temperature to drive moisture out. Short runs are not good for any engine. Engines, particularly diesels in humid environments, are happiest and last the longest when they run often and long enough to get to full operating temperature. If you decide to go with an inverter, now you have to figure out if you can get by with a cheaper modified sine wave inverter or do you need a full sine wave inverter.......

Thanks very much for that information. Especially the reminder to run those diesels. A friend who used to work commercial told me that they had Lehmans that ran 25000 hours before overhaul but the secret was good maintenance and constantly running them . Us pleasure sailors on the other hand put off routine maintenance and typically go out for short runs. Keep it running and she is happiest.
