I am looking at a Sloop/cutter rigged Whitby 42 and am wondering if it was modified from a ketch or were there some that were built with this rig? Will the mast be in the same location on both the ketch vs. the sloop? What changes in performance should be expected with the two different rigs? Any back round you are familiar with would be helpful. Thank you.

HA HA let the games begin.............. This is an inside joke and some of you newbies will not get it.

See attached, read from the bottom;

theincrediblehull.blogspot.com/search/label/ketch%20rig

This is what I found, feel free to correct any errors;

1. Most W42 were built as Ketches.

2. Most (all?) Brewer 12.8 were built as Sloops.

3. When the 12.8 sloop (modified W42) was being redesigned the mast was moved approx 3ft aft.

4. Some W42 (at least 2 that I know) were built as sloops.

5. I have been onboard and measured ONE W42 Sloop where the mast was in the original Ketch position (i.e. mast up against the forward saloon bulkhead). She had a bowsprit. The owner assured me that she sailed well.

6. When I decided to convert my W42 Ketch to a sloop I had Bob Perry run the numbers. He saw no reason why it would not work well, BUT, I had to install a bowsprit.

Naturally you will not have the ability to sail the beloved "Jib and Jigger" configuration.

Any clarifications contact me at whitby42 "at" gmail.com

We've met one Brewer 12.8 (owner claims it is a 12.8, at least) that is a ketch rig. The boat is currently in George Town, The Bahamas, but is registered in Illinois and normally is kept north of Chicago.
