Polar Data

Does anyone have or know where to obtain polar data (i.e. how the boats perform in different wind conditions) for Bewer 44 (most specifically a ketch rig, but others may work)? I want to try to use it for trip planning and do not have data for Gratitude specifically.

I'd like to know this as well. Particularly how close a Whitby 42 ketch can typically sail to the wind?

The complexity of the sail plans makes this interestingly complex.

I’ve noted a huge difference in handling with a partially empty vs a full center-line tank. We had an empty tank and could barely point above 60 degrees. Now we’ve got a center tank full of water, I think we can point at almost 50 degrees.

Some factors I've noted that help to point higher, and which are probably true for all sailboats, are: 110 % high cut jib is better than a 140 %, a new mainsail, and higher hull speeds. On a side note i was surprised to be able to sail upwind with Jib and Mizzen only.

Do you remember what type of sails you were using? Hankon vs roller furling (vertical or horizontal furling)

Our headsails are roller-furling. We have Harken furlers. The staysail is 100% and closer to the deck. The outer is yankee cut, 100% not an inch longer.

Main is fully-battened and stacks onto the boom. We have lazy jacks to keep the mess mostly under control. Mizzen, similarly, is fully battened and has lazy jacks to keep it near the boom.

We also have a mizzen stays’l. It’s only for off-wind, so, not relevant here.

We’ve noted that main + mizzen isn’t a great idea when close-hauled because the dirty air on the mizzen seems to make it simply create drag.

I’ve been playing with a poor-sailor’s traveler. We’ve been rigging a boom-end vang-like multipart block and tackle to the toe rail to tweak the main’s position, pulling it up when beating and transferring the main sheet to the toerail when running.
