We live aboard our Whitby 42 in Australia and have a fully enclosed hardtop which makes our boat so much more liveable in all sorts of weather than anything we have experienced before. I have just added fourteen detailed photos of it to the "Our Boat' page of our blog if anyone is interested. Go to the page then scroll down to see them. Cheers - Rob Oberg

Rob,

Your hardtop looks awesome. We recently purchased a Brewer 44 and would love to have a hardtop made for it.

Is there anything you would change about your hardtop? My biggest issues with our soft dodger and bimini is that it’s hard to see the sails and forward visibility is not great.

Two things I would change; it's a little low, so using the forward cabin hatchway means a bit of ducking; the thing is to add a hatch or porthole in order to assist in visualizing the sails. Other than those things, I love it

If I was redesigning what we have I would have it joining the deck a little further and the front windows sloped a little further back to give it a sleeker look and improve vision of the sails from the main sheet winch position. I'd also extend the fibreglass top all the way to the arch and move the hatch rearward to over the helmsman. This would provide more room for solar panels and provide a view of the mainsail from the helm.

Having said that, what we have is pretty damned good. Cheers

Gino - We finally decided on a hardtop for Windreka. We went with Atlantic Towers and it should be here in the next couple of weeks. We will post pictures of the installation. We looked at 100's of hardtops and talked to 3 or 4 metal fabricators and after all the bids were in found that the custom tops at Atlantic Towers were reasonable. A big plus is the fact we won't have to construct the top ourselves! We have seen several of their arches and they are constructed well. So far the customer service at Atlantic Towers has been great and we can't wait to see the finished top installed.

For those who have a hardtop what is your recommended height (or headroom) of the top?
