We have a 1983 Whitby and want to put a hardtop on to support a bank of solar panels for our new 12V refrig system. We have looked at hundreds of pictures and are looking for info from any of the Whitby owners who have one and is willing to share pictures and thoughts regarding what they like and dislike. Also, thoughts on moving the traveler to the top of the hardtop

The Canvas Creations WaveStopper dodger is a delight. It's a bent panel of polystyrene. Really strong. Very rugged.

We have the plastic "T" handles. We don't recommend those. Get the stainless steel handrails along the top.

The front windows slide into tracks that are welded into the top. The acrylic windows are welded into the fabric so there's no stitching to leak. The zippers do drip in extremely heavy downpours.

The asymmetry of our cockpits means that the steel tubing is a little more complex than on other boats. Be sure to have your longest winch handles ready before you commit to the location of the steel supports. We spent a bit of time getting the structure in the right place.

We had the dodger created so it would be tall and VERY deep. It's quite high and goes a long way over the cockpit. There are only a few inches of clearance under the boom. Just enough for the solar panels. We have to carefully manage the slab reef lines when the main is down to be sure they don't snag a panel if we move the boom.

An alternative is a shorter, lower dodger and a high, separate bimini top. This wouldn't allow the two large, rigid solar panels that we have.

Here's the photo of the dodger with solar panels.

This is the custom dodger that came with the boat; a beautiful piece of kit!

While I am not in favor of this option, there was a discussion here about attaching the main sheet to the mizzen mast.
