Beaching Brewer12.8

Thierry, agreed, under perfect conditions the risk is small. I've never seen those conditions in real life but my experience is limited. It sounds like you know what you are doing so you may be fine. It's just not something I would do with my boat.

It is my understanding that all the 12.8s had a center board. To my knowledge, the center board was only an option on the Brewer 44s. There is also a Brewer 42 which is nearly identical to the Whitby 42 but made in Ft Myers. I don't know of any Whitby 42s or Brewer 42s that had a center board.

Bruce, the Whitbys and Brewers are very well built and the hulls are quite strong. Laying (gently) on its side should pose zero problems beyond a few scratches in the paint. My concern is for the impact if the legs give way. Again, the hull might be fine, but everything else in or on the boat can be damaged or knocked loose.

Last fall I had the sad task of briefly inspecting several Whitbys and Brewers that were knocked over by hurricane Ian in Florida. While all of the hulls had minimal or no structural damage, the chaos inside the boats was amazing. Leaking diesel tanks, broken engine mounts, broken tabbing, broken cabinets, broken masts, to name just a few of the worst problems. These issues were not specific to Whitbys and Brewers. Any boat that lands with an impact will probably have damage. 

Much like parachuting, it's not the fall that kills you, its the sudden stop at the end.  

The good news: I don't think we lost any Whitbys or Brewers to Ian. All of the boats damaged have been or are being repaired. That's a good sign of a quality boat. Even if they do experience major damage they are worth being fixed.

Thanks for your info. Indeed, there is a distinct difference in impact falling from stands on the hard vs gradually tipping to what is hopefully a smooth bottom with a deliberate careening.
