Adding a stbd side sea water intake was created by Mark Popiel
Does anyone have any experience with port and starboard sea water intakes? I'm considering adding one on the stbd side. It would hopefully solve two problems 1. Our refrigeration is water cooled, and it will run dry when we sail hard on the Port tack and 2. We would be able to motorsail on the Port tack. My thought is to plumb the new stbd side intake into the sea chest. I wonder if the chest will be too high while on the Port tack and so will not fill and supply water where needed. The sea chest is vented, and the engine intake is in the highest row of intakes on the sea chest.

Is your port side intake out the water when on a port tack?

Hi
Yes, on occasion the intake catches air on port tack. Once the prime to the engine is lost it is slow to recover. Results in engine overheat. The intake is positioned betwen the sea chest and the keel.

I don't have a sea chest on JDV so I'm not speaking from experience, but here are a few thoughts...
You would have to be heeled over pretty far to expose that intake.
Adding a thruhull on the stb side would only help if you CLOSED the thruhull on the port side.
Could it be something else? Could you be getting air in from your vent when on a port tack?
On a port tack, you'll be pushed a little bit sideways to starboard. That will create a small negative pressure on the port side of the keel. Maybe it's enough that the engine and/or fridge pumps are pulling air in from the vent?
Put a valve, or a stopper of some kind on the vent and see if that makes a difference. If it's a clear hose maybe you can monitor the water level in it next time you are out.

Interesting idea. I'm not at the boat to experiment.
1. How are your intakes plumbed without a sea chest?
2. Are you able to motor sail equally well on each tack?
Doug S. was my buyers broker and he discussed the pros and cons of sea chest venting. Without a vent if the prime is lost when the through hull catches air then the air is trapped. If it is vented, then the sea chest will empty easier in a roll. Perhaps a one way valve on the vent would solve this issue.

We have dedicated intakes for each piece of equipment (engine, fwd head, water maker, and wash down pump). The engine thru hull is in front of the engine, low on the hull, next to the keel. Probably similar to yours, but a couple feet further aft. We have never had an issue with motor sailing.
