Mast leaking into saloon was created by Michael Collins
Hi Folks
We have water coming into the saloon down the outside of our mast. Our brewer is on the hard in Trinidad and the folks there are going to pull the mast and reseat the deck/mast ring. They intend to remove the stainless steel support plates in the hole . Has anyone had this problem and are we on the right track.

Our Brewer 44 has a keel stepped mast, but we had a "compression" area at the sheave for the center board just behind the mast. We did not pull the mast, but lifted the deck ring plate and made a two part (overlapping) fiberglass base to go under the plate, fill and reinforce the depression, and provide a "proud" area so water does not puddle. Replaced the mast sealant, boot, etc. and, so far, no leaks. I can send photos if you want and give me an email address.

Had the same problem on our 1984 12.8. Pulled the mast and rebed the mast ring. Fixed it 100%.

We make a boot from a truck inner tube, and use a combination of stainless hose clamps on the outside of the deck flange and black ductape to seal it to the mast. It looks great for a summer season between winter haulouts, and fresh black ductape is reapplied each year. Not a drop.

Hi Mike and Sandy. We're sorry for your troubles. On our previous boat we, too, used the inner tube and hose clamp system and added clear silicone caulking to fill any gaps. It's a quick and easy system and you can keep messing with it if need be until nary a drop comes in.

Good luck and Seasons Greetings!

Just to clarify. We tried everything to seal the mast to collar joint and discovered that the leak was actually between the metal mast collar and the fiberglass deck. When the mast was removed and the collar bolts removed the collar just lifted up. There was practically no adhesion. After I rebed the collar to the deck the leak stopped and has been great for at least 5 years now.
