locating anode on volvo was created by Stephen Colquhoun
Hi Bob
I own Loin’s Paw sail no. 315 built 1984 we are having trouble locating the zinc anodes, there is one in a fixture in the raw water inlet line. It has the anode on one side and a ground wire on the other. Star shadow sail no. 325 is in the same marina and although they are both MD30’s they seem very different. For example my engine has oil cooler lines above the oil filter 325 doesn’t. I have two 3/8 square head plug (the type you take out with a 3/8 extension ) forward and aft of the “frost plug “ in the block the forward could not be removed without removing the heat exchanger and the aft is seized to the point it would have to be heated to cheery red in order to remove ( I don’t want to do this and find it was just a plug). Were these type of plugs used in these engines. I found a anode in the oil cooler in a schematic that I found on Marine parts express web site but have not taken it apart yet to look. Should I??? Any ideas on finding the anodes would be appreciated. Also is there a way of finding out which eng. I am working on for example a sub series number.
Thanks Steve

Update on anode search

After a closer look with the schematic Larry and I figured out why our engines looked so different. Mine has had the oil cooler removed, the hoses are run around to the rear starboard side of the engine were it seems to be hooked up to a small oil cooler strapped to the top of the bell housing. I assume that with out an oil cooler the only anode that I have to worry about is the one in the intake hose. Has anyone had any experience with this setup, should I be concerned about proper oil cooling in the Caribbean

Steve,

I have a Volvo MD30A engine too. Hull #332 1987

I have found only 1 zinc anode on the starboard side in the raw water cooling. (see photo)
Just forward of this output pipe and near the oil filter. Several old zinc were found inside broken off.
We paid a certified Volvo Penta tech to remove the raw water cooling box and take them out.
The oil cooler is still original on ours.

The cooling water goes all the way to the transmission MS2B.
I was told there was a zinc there too,but do not see one.
